Margaret M. “Peggy” (McCarthy) Haughey, 89, of Waban, MA and York Harbor, ME, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by the love of her family and caregivers on May 16, 2025.
Born on July 8, 1935 in Melrose, MA, Peggy was the youngest of four children of Irish immigrants, and was tremendously proud of her Irish heritage. Peggy attended Framingham State College and it was during that time that she met her future husband, Philip C. “Phil” Haughey. She and Phil were married for 67 years.
Peggy and Phil settled in Waban over 60 years ago, becoming well-known fixtures on the red clay courts of what was then known as “The Neighborhood Club”, St. Philip Neri and Waban Square. Peggy was an active volunteer at all of her childrens’ schools, Meals on Wheels and also served as a Hospice volunteer. Peggy, Phil and their kids spent many happy summers at Longwood Cricket Club. Peggy loved to travel, whether to Nantucket or to her beloved Ireland, she was always up for an adventure. She and Phil were blessed to have been able to see many parts of the world together.
Peggy was a skilled artist, painting still lifes was perhaps her favorite. She was a lifelong learner of art, taking classes in various mediums over the years. Her artistic flair translated to her sense of fashion, eye for decoration and entertaining skills. Her house always felt like a home, thanks to her warm touch. In 1990, after years of looking, she and Phil found their dream home on the coast of Maine . They spent countless weekends traveling up and down the coast “antiquing” and filling their home with her signature sense of style. Peggy and Phil adored their home, and became active members in the York Harbor community as parishioners at St. Christopher’s by the Sea, members of The York Harbor Reading Room, and the York Golf and Tennis Club. Peggy was an active volunteer at the York Historical Society as well as York Land Trust.
Above all, Peggy loved her family, plain and simple.
A very special and heartfelt thank you to the incredible caregivers who so compassionately and lovingly took care of Peggy and Phil, most especially Fatu Sesay, their longest-standing caregiver, Phillis Cavaleri, Andrea Krautz and Brandon Dvorsky. To the incredible nurses at Good Shepherd Community Care: Lily Beagan, Lisa Barsanti, Vicki Hotvedt and Dianna Sawyer, our most sincere gratitude for helping to guide our mother Home.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Phil, and their four children: Christopher M. (Ellenann) Haughey of Wellesley, MA; Philip C. (Nicole) Haughey, Jr. of Wellesley, MA; Elizabeth H. (Arthur) Greenwood of Wellesley, MA; and Andrea H. (Tyler) Bristol of Eliot, ME.
