Donald “Don” E. Gates, Jr., 58, of Worcester, passed away on Friday, May 9th, at home.
He leaves behind his son, Joshua Gates of Athol; his two daughters, Jasmyn Gates of Auburn and Kelsey Kramer of Brockton; his girlfriend, Eileen White of Worcester; his sister, Donna Nieber and her partner, Mark, of Worcester; two brothers, James Gates of Worcester and Christopher Gates of Rutland; his lifelong best friend, Richie Mulhern; his beloved dog, Mickey; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald E. Gates, Sr. and Virginia (Reynolds) Gates, and his cherished dog, Minnie.
Born and raised in Worcester, Don attended W.I.T.I. and Salter College. Early in his career, he worked for Leonard Israel in property management, and for nearly 30 years, he was a pool builder with Snyder Pools and, most recently, Oceanside Pools alongside Dorian Pools. Through his work, he earned the trust and respect of his community.
But Don was much more than his profession—he was a true craftsman of all trades, always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Whether fixing something around the house, helping a neighbor, or offering support, Don never hesitated to be there for others.
He had a deep love for the simple joys in life. For many years, he volunteered at Wesley United Methodist Church’s food bank during the holidays. He found peace in fishing, creativity in writing poetry, calmness in completing puzzles, guidance in reading, and passion in PC gaming and Star Trek marathons. A proud Ford enthusiast, Don also found joy in working around the yard and by the pool on the weekends, savoring every moment he spent outdoors. Family was everything to Don. He loved hosting gatherings and being surrounded by those he cared about most. Known for his sharp wit and sarcastic sense of humor, he also had a heart full of compassion and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A graveside service and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, is assisting the family with arrangements.
