Bruce Hausstin Andrews
1945-2025
Lyman – Bruce Andrews passed away at home on May 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Bruce grew up in Scarsdale, New York, getting into mischief particularly while spending summers on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. He attended the University of Connecticut where he continued the mischief as a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity; met his wife of 49 years, Martha (“Marti”) Gilman Andrews on a blind date (love at first sight!); and earned his B.A. in 1967. Bruce earned his M.S. (1969) and Ph.D. (1980) in operations research from Polytechnic University.
Bruce and Marti married in 1969 in Windsor, CT, and after living and working in New York City and New Jersey, they fell in love with Maine’s natural beauty and moved there. Bruce was a Professor of Business Administration at the University of Southern Maine (USM) from 1974-2013, and in addition to his academic work, contributed to and directed the Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER), providing evidence-based solutions for Maine businesses.
He loved taking advantage of everything Maine had to offer – including swimming in Bunganut Pond and walking on southern Maine’s ocean beaches (always keeping an eye out for nice rocks). He was an avid ice skater, cross-country skier, snowshoer, water-skier, and eater. He and Marti loved to travel and spoiled their daughter Kathryn with epic family trips all over the world. His sense of humor, intelligence, and generosity with those he loved were pillars of his personality.
Bruce was predeceased by his wife, Marti Andrews, and his parents, John and Helen Andrews. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Andrews; son-in-law, Nicholas Weir; and grandchildren Finley Andrews Weir and Holly Martha Weir.
Bruce’s life was celebrated privately at his family’s home. Memorial contributions in his honor are welcome to the Bunganut Pond Association, P.O. Box 237, Alfred, ME 04002.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service, East Waterboro, www.mainefuneral.com
