Dateline: Mansfield, MA

David A. “Newt” Garland, age 61, a lifelong resident of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the loving Fiancé of Dianne L. Schillberg.

Born in Attleboro, MA on February 10, 1964, he was a loving son of the late James A., Sr. and Beverly L. (Richards) Garland.

Dave grew up in Mansfield and from an early age developed a strong love for all thing’s nature. He spent much time exploring in the woods, gaining the nickname “Newt” by his family and friends. He was a 1982 graduate of Mansfield High School and also attended Bridgewater Sate College.

Following in his grandfather’s footsteps, Newt was an extremely talented woodworker and a self-employed furniture maker and painter. David was also employed at Wood Forms in Mansfield and previously served as a Ranger in Vermont.

Dave’s love for family and friends was second-to-none. He was ever-so proud of his over thirty years of involvement as a member of the Native American Algonquin Medicine Society. David’s native name was “Silent Wolf”, and he was quite knowledgeable on the subject of plants, tree, bushes and herbs. He had an exceptional talent for finding arrowheads, working with wampum and loved participating in native American ceremonies. Newt was also an avid fisherman and will always be remembered for his kindness and respect towards animals.

He is survived by his devoted daughters Jamie R. Glidden of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and Sarah A. Cavalieri of North Attleboro. He was the cherished grandfather of Madison, Cameron and Bella. He was the dear brother of Dan Garland and his wife Paula of North Attleboro, Sarah Garland of Manchester, Vermont and the late James Garland, Jr., who is survived by his wife Susan Garland of Foster, Rhode Island. He was the much-loved uncle of Franklin, Virginia, Olivia and Katie and is also survived by his cherished extended family, his native American family, asl well as his many treasured friends.

Services and burial will be private and visiting hours are omitted.
