Obituary

Orpha Mona Zachary, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Alexandria, Indiana, on May 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and her devoted caregiver and niece, Cindy Carpenter.

She was born on December 10, 1936, in Jamestown, Tennessee, to Eather and Ruth (Jones) Turner and was affectionately known as “Orphie” by her family and close friends. In her late teens, her family relocated to Muncie, Indiana; soon after she married the love of her life, Leon Zachary (deceased). They were married for 67 years and built a beautiful life together in Anderson, Indiana, raising three children: Rick Zachary (Karen), Kathy Utley (Todd), and Lisa Zachary.

She is survived by her sisters, Loma (John) Vincent of Muncie and Cloma (preceded in death by her husband, Hoppy) Posey of Tennessee; her sister-in-law, Marion Turner (preceded in death by her husband, Harlen) of Muncie; and her brothers, Sheldon (Saundra) Turner of Anderson and Timothy (Jill) Turner of Tennessee.

Mona devoted her life to her family as a homemaker. Her gentle spirit and steady presence shaped the lives of all who knew her. She played a vital role in raising her nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and was proudly blessed to be a fifth generation “Nanny” to four great-great-grandchildren.

As a member of Alexandria Baptist Church, Mona spent her Sunday mornings rooted in faith and worship. Her quiet strength, deep kindness, and unwavering love for her family and her faith will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her warmth and devotion will be forever remembered.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Parkinson Foundation.
