Obituary

Margaret Hunter passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia, at the age of 85.

Graveside services will be held 11 AM, Saturday, May 10, 2025, at the Irwinville Cemetery in Irwinville, Georgia, with the Rev. Luke Smith officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

Mrs. Hunter was born November 24, 1939, in Irwin County Georgia, to the late Phillip and Lola Mae Smith McGee. She married Bud Hunter in 1955 and devoted herself to being a homemaker and raising their daughters. After Bud’s passing in 1982, she returned to work and was a mainstay at the Fitzgerald – Ben Hill County Library. She retired after 15 years due to health issues. Tiny but fierce, she lived every day with dignity on her own terms. She was loved immensely by those who called her Mama, Granny, Little Granny and Aunt Margaret. She shared her love of cooking with anyone who wanted to join her table.

She is survived by her daughters: Debbie Cobb & Larry of Fitzgerald, and Susie Wynn & Ellis of Leesburg; a son in law, Lloyd Meeks; grandchildren: Ashley Padgett & Hobo, Adam Cobb & Nikki, Cal Meeks & Charlotte, Ben Meeks & Stephanie, Suzanne Butler & Connor, and Lamar Wynn & Kaitie; great grandchildren: Alexis Meeks, Levi and Rylee Cobb, Ellison and Ava Butler; her sister, Velma Hasty; a brother, William McGee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Hunter, her daughter Dee Meeks, and her sisters: Inez Rhodes and Frances McEachern.

The family would like to thank her caregivers Deena Young, Carolyn Cutter, Jennifer Shelton and Lisa Jones, who loved her and helped her to be at home the last months of her life. We are grateful for their assistance.
