Obituary

Dr. Daniel Peter Mann, Esteemed Physicist and Lifelong Scholar, Passes at 94.

Dr. Daniel Peter Mann, a longtime resident of Andover, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 19, 2025. He was 94 years old.

Born on August 31, 1930, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Daniel was the devoted son of the late Peter and Victoria Mann. Daniel’s rare intellect earned him a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1958 and into a distinguished career in physics. His passion for scientific discovery led him to France in the 1960s, where he worked at the French Atomic Energy Commission in Paris-Saclay where he was deeply entrenched in the field of nuclear physics—specifically researching particle accelerators and the properties of uranium—the kind of pursuit that was the indelible character of his lifelong curiosity and dedication to knowledge.

Daniel was more than a scientist; he was a Renaissance man. His inquisitiveness ranged both broadly and deeply. He always had a book in hand. He was a perpetual student of history—endlessly eager to share his knowledge. A close and critical-thinking observer of social and political currents and debates.

But most conspicuously, Daniel’s problem-solving engine found lifelong content hands-on while exploring the meticulous engineering and exquisite craftsmanship of vintage Mercedes-Benz automobiles, igniting a lifelong passion for restoring them.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores Mann, with whom he shared a passion for travel and a mutual love of France, where they resided for a period of time. He also leaves behind his cherished daughter, Daphne V. Birch of New York City; his sister, Eugenia Mann of Chicago; his dearest grandson, Wyeth Birch; and nieces and nephew: Georgia Powers, Vanessa Veleris, and Philip Mann.

A private memorial service will be held at the West Parish Chapel in Andover, MA. on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Mann’s memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home of Andover.
