Obituary

Yarmouth, ME- Sally A. (Hakala) (Allen) Hansen of Yarmouth Maine, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2025. Sally was born in Worcester, MA on March 7, 1929 to the late Augustus and Annie (Bryant) Hakala of Boylston MA. In 1954, Sally married Wesley Allen (d. 1965) of Wellesley, MA and they moved to West Boylston, MA to raise their two daughters. Sally married George E. Hansen Jr. of Holden, MA (d.1999) in 1966.

Sally’s lifelong enjoyments were her love for gardening, an avid downhill skier, an antique collector, decorative furniture stenciling, antique theorem painting and Chinese painting. Sally enjoyed her circle of friends, entertained often in her home, was a member of the West Boylston First Congregational Church serving on many committees, founder of the West Boylston and Quechee, VT Garden Clubs, member of the MA Audubon Society, and was very proud of her years as a Girl Scout troop leader in West Boylston.

Sally cherished her family roots in Boylston. She loved her family immensely. She was an enthusiastic supporter at her daughters’ high school sport events. She and her family enjoyed summers at Lake Winnipesaukee, in NH, at Moosehead Lake in ME., family skiing trips, and spending time at their vacation home in Quechee VT. In 1978 George’s career moved them to Little Rock, Arkansas for 5 yrs after which they retired to Quechee. George came out of retirement in 1988 and they moved to Manila, Philippines for 6 yrs. There Sally was a member of the American Women’s Club of the Philippines. They enjoyed traveling throughout Asia, Europe and Indonesia. They later moved to Gorham, ME when George was ill.

Sally was predeceased by her first husband Wes, her second husband George, her brother Gus Hakala and her sister Flora Mae (Fluffy) Kennedy.

She is survived by her two daughters, Deborah (James) Arcaro of Gorham, ME; Donna (Mark d.2015) Murray of Dayton ME.; her step-son George (Carol) Hansen lll of Leawood, KS. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grand children, many nieces and nephews, all beloved.

In lieu of flowers, at Sally’s request, donations in her name be made to University of Maine Orono General Fund of which she and George were Ambassadors for UMO for many years. Burial of ashes will be on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 11:00am in Pine Grove Cemetery, Boylston. To leave an online condolence message, please click on the guestbook link.
