Lewis C. Delvental, known to all as "Del", of Stoneham and Tewksbury, MA., passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at The Blair House of Tewksbury. He was 95 years old.
Del was born in Boston on August 26, 1929, and raised in Woburn with his eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his brothers Raymond, Edward, and Walter and his sisters Vivien, Mildred, and Lillian. Del's sister, Eleanor, passed away on the same day as Del (4/24/25). Del is survived by his youngest sister, Joan Tenny.
Del is also survived by the love of his life, Phyllis (Tartis) Delvental of Tewksbury, MA, his children Christine MacMullin of Manchester, MA, Karen Swartwout of Burlington, MA, and Carl Delvental and his wife Sherri of Fairfield, IL. He was the loving "Grampa" of Cathy, Pete, Julie, and Jill and their spouses, and "Grampa-Grampa" to 9 great-grandchildren. Del is also survived by his sister-in-law, Pearl Tibbetts along with many nieces and nephews.
Del was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He enlisted at the age of 16 and was honorably discharged in September 1949 after serving our country for 4 years. A month later, he met Phyllis at a dance at St. Michael’s Parish Hall in Lynn, MA. Del must have made quite the impression, as they married one and a half years later, and remained happily married for the next 73 years.
Del and Phyllis first settled in Chelsea and then moved to Stoneham, where they raised their three children.
Del worked at Raytheon for 43 years as an Engineering Specialist. One of the projects he was most proud of was working on the Patriot Missile.
Upon retirement, Del and Phyllis moved to Tewksbury, where they lived for over 25 years. They loved to travel and went on several trips and excursions within and outside the United States. They enjoyed dinners and outings with friends & family and never missed a family celebration, such as holidays, graduations, weddings, births, and birthdays.
Del had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing golf. He loved all kinds of music, and a record album was always playing on the stereo. Christine, Karen, and Carl fondly remember listening to everything from Elvis and Marty Robbins to The Beatles and Beethoven. Del was handy. If he wasn’t reading and keeping up on current affairs, he was probably tinkering in his workshop. He enjoyed history and watching the History Channel on TV. He was very interested in family genealogy and did a great deal of research on both his and Phyllis’ families. Del loved computers and immediately took to them when they landed. After he retired, he volunteered once a week at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain.
Del will be remembered for his amazing sense of humor and kind, playful nature. Perhaps his favorite pastime was kidding around and making everyone around him smile and laugh. No words can describe how much he will be missed.
We would like to thank all of the staff at The Blair House, who lovingly cared for Del the past four years.
