Miles Edward Hess, Jr. “Woody”, 77, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton, Georgia.
A Memorial Reception will be held from 2-4 PM, Saturday, May 31, 2025, at The Depot, 116 N Johnston Street, Fitzgerald, Georgia. A private family graveside service will be held at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Fulton County, Georgia.
Born May 2, 1947, in Atlanta, Georgia, Miles was the son of Miles Edward Hess, Sr. & Amelia Dittler Hess. In 1969 he graduated from the University of Georgia, in Athens, with a degree in Food Science. Miles was an Eagle Scout, a lieutenant in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He later worked with Deep South Products for many years. Miles was also a licensed merchant marine and an amateur radio operator.
Miles made Fitzgerald his home for the past 32 years, where he enjoyed many friends and was an active supporter of 4-H and other local organizations. He will be remembered for his wisdom, storytelling, sense of humor and generosity. Miles loved working the land and took pride in growing onions, potatoes, and corn on his property.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert & Carol Hess of Charleston, South Carolina; and three nephews: Alex, James, and William. He is also survived by cousins, Jack and Carol Olden of Atlanta, Georgia and Susan Houser of Canton, Georgia.
