Cortlandt Manor, NY – It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elias Spyropoulos of Cortlandt Manor, New York on April 19, 2025. Elias (Louis to friends and employees) was born on March 9, 1936 in the small village of Aerohorion, outside of Kalamata, Greece, to Paraskevi (Milatos) and Panayiotis Spyropoulos. Elias immigrated to the United States in 1956 and after various jobs found his way into the restaurant business. While taking English classes on the upper Westside of Manhattan he met Ruth Schwettscher a recent immigrant from Germany. She would become the love of his life and they were married in 1962. They would spend the next 63 years married until his death, many of those years working side by side in the various restaurants they owned. She survives him as do their three children, daughter, Christina Spyropoulos (son in law Noe Quijada), son, Thomas Spyropoulos, son Michael Spyropoulos (daughter in law Deborah White-Spyropoulos), and grandchildren Eliza Hope and Michael William Spyropoulos. He is also survived by his brother, Winston (Nick) Spyropoulos of Athens, Greece. Elias was preceded in death by his brothers John, George, Custard, Anthony and sister Electra Gioldasis.
Elias resided in Cortlandt Manor since 1990. Previous to that he was a resident of the Bronx. He owned the Capital coffeeshop in the Getty Square section of Yonkers from the mid 1960's until 1981. After that he worked with a colleague named Peter Pappas to open the Executive Diner in Hawthorne NY. From 1985 to 2008, he, his wife and children greeted and served countless hungry patrons and employed numerous people.
Elias was a loving and devoted husband, father, and family man. He never let his family down and loved America. He loved DIY projects and was forever in search of a great deal. He was well respected by his many employees. His life was the definition of the "American Dream." Funeral Arrangements provided by John G. Crawford Memorial Services.
