Harriet Annie Brooks Hathaway, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and giving on March 10, 2025. Born in Newport, New Hampshire, on February 24, 1935, she was the daughter of Bertha Harriet Houghton and Judson Milton Brooks and one of ten siblings raised on their family farm.
Harriet pursued her passion for floral design at the University of New Hampshire, where her journey ultimately led her to Springfield, MA. It was there that she met the love of her life, Frederick Hathaway. The couple exchanged vows on July 26, 1958, at Harriet's family farm, beginning a beautiful partnership in life and parenthood. Together, they raised five children and two bonus children: Raymond Hathaway, Frances Hathaway Ohzourk (Scott), Allen Hathaway (Mary Lou), Carolyn Hathaway Gregitis, Wayne Hathaway (Teddi), R. Gordon Dixon, and Raynore Dixon Jones (Russell).
Harriet's heart expanded further as she became a devoted grandmother to ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was affectionately known as "Gram" by many who cherished her warmth and nurturing spirit. Harriet thrived in the company of family and friends, especially her dear friends Dot LeBeau, Rowena Robertson, Heather Breau, and her sister, Sabra Keery.
Nature was one of Harriet’s greatest joys; she loved camping and hiking, where she often collected unique rocks and had a remarkable eye for spotting four-leaf clovers. Harriet had an unwavering desire to learn, which led her to take cake decorating classes and start a successful wedding cake business, showcasing both her artistic skills and floral arrangement talent.
Harriet dedicated her life to caring for others through work and contributions in her community, within her church, and in the cafeterias of West Springfield public schools.
Harriet had an unmatched love for sports and never missed a chance to watch her favorite events. A devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers and an enthusiastic follower of Jeff Gordon in NASCAR, she celebrated each victory with genuine joy. Her passion for sports was passed on to her grandchildren and great grandchildren who often enjoyed watching sports with her.
Harriet is predeceased by her cherished children, Rowena and Frederick Hathaway Jr., her grandson Jeremiah Ohzourk, her daughter-in-law Teddi Hathaway, and her beloved husband Frederick Hathaway.
Harriet Annie Brooks Hathaway will be deeply missed by her family and friends, whose lives she touched with her love and laughter. As we remember Harriet, we reflect on the unique way she cared for others and the memorable impact she had on all who crossed her path.
