Dr. Paul J. Catinella– of Wellesley, a retired Dermatologist and Veteran, died Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at the Wingate at Needham. He was 90. Born in Boston, Dr. Catinella was a lifelong resident of Wellesley. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School, Harvard University, Tufts Medical School, Washington University, Barnard Skin Cancer Hospital, St. Louis and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
A Veteran of World War II, Dr. Catinella served in the Army from 1937 to 1946 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel serving in Europe. He volunteered at the Chelsea Soldiers Homes in Chelsea.
He worked in private practice for 57 years and was on the staff of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital serving as Physician-in-Chief, Dermatology Service and President of Medical Staff. He served on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine and served as Past President of the New England Dermatological Society and was a former Board Member of the Massachusetts Academy of Dermatology. He was also a member of the Charles River District Medical Society, the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Medical Society and the North American Clinical Dermatological Society.
After his retirement, Dr. Catinella pursued his ongoing interest in classical music, opera, gardening and international travel. He was a member of the Sudbury Opera Lovers Group, and a former member of the Wellesley Exchange Club and the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Co., Massachusetts.
Dr. Catinella was the husband of the late Betty J (Poland); and late companion of Gertrude “Trudy” Biernson. He is survived by five daughters, Carolyn A. Shea, Natick MA, Sylvia Catinella and husband, Forrest Wilson, Decatur GA, Mary Beth Catinella and husband, C. Michael Williams, Slidell LA, Nancy G. Catinella, Wellesley MA and Deirdre Catinella and husband, Dr. Peter Vale, Drummoyne NSW Australia. One son, Paul E. Catinella and wife, Kathryn. He was the brother of the late Philomena C. Smith, Angelina Catinella, Julia Catinella and Virginia Catinella. He leaves his nieces and nephew, Susan Jonsberg, Silver Springs MD, Paul E. Smith, Waltham MA and Patricia Bourne of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., Monday at 8:00 AM. Funeral mass in St. Paul’s Church, Wellesley, at 9:00 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours on Sunday from 4-8 PM. Interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Roslindale.
