Obituary

Nancy (Scholfield) Burrows, 86, of Mystic, passed away Monday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

Nancy was born August 6, 1920, in Guilford, Connecticut, the daughter of Carl W. Scholfield and Harriet Salome (Dickinson) Scholfield. She lived her early life in Guilford and graduated from Guilford High School in 1938. Nancy like horseback riding and told stories about several harrowing rides that she had as a girl.

After graduating from high school, she attended Larson College in New Haven and began dating her future husband, Ambrose H. Burrows from Mystic. Nancy met Ambrose through her mother's family which had a home in Mystic near Ambrose's family home which was also on Pearl Street.

Nancy and Ambrose eventually married in 1942 and the marriage lasted for 64 years. She had two children, a daughter, Janet (Burrows) Godwin, and a son, Albert Crary Burrows. A great sorrow in her life was that both of her children predeceased her; Albert in 2000 and Janet in 2002.

Most of her adult life was spent caring for her family, but she also obtained a real estate broker's license, graduated from H&R Block tax courses, she worked as a book buyer for Porteous-Mitchell department stores in Maine and at Jordon Marsh in MA., taught Sunday school and scouts, did volunteer work at Anna-Jacques Hospital in Newburyport MA and was briefly a trip supervisor for the Groton Senior Center.

She was an avid reader and had a strong interest in history, particularly the history of Mystic and the Burrows family history. Nancy was a member of the Mystic River Historical Society and enjoyed telling "stories" about family history during family gatherings.

Nancy loved traveling and took several Caribbean cruises and trips to Europe, Hawaii and the West Coast. She also enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist.

Although Nancy and Ambrose always maintained strong connections to Mystic and Guildford, they did move often because of Ambrose's occupation. They lived in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, New Haven, Connecticut, Kennebunkport, Maine, South Freeport, Maine, Marshfield, Massachusetts, Bucksport, Maine, and Newburyport, Massachusetts. When Ambrose retired, they returned to Connecticut to live in Essex and Mystic.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Ambrose; a brother, Carl T. Scholfield of Guilford; a grandson, Ambrose M. Godwin of Mystic; a son-in-law, Deryll Godwin of Mystic; 2 nieces, and 10 nephews.

Donations in Nancy's memory may be made to the Mystic River Historical Society, at 74 High Street, Mystic CT 06355, the Noank Historical Society, PO Box 9454, Noank CT 06340, or the Mystic-Noank Library, 40 Library Street, Mystic CT 06355
