We sadly announce the loss of Dr. Richard B. Cohen, 83, of Chestnut Hill. Dr. Cohen died peacefully at 6:30 AM on July 28th after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was a devoted husband to Elizabeth Feigon, devoted father to his three children, Jonathan Cohen, Amy Cohen-Varela, and Jennifer Cohen, loving grandfather to his three grandchildren, Samuel and Helen Cohen and Gabriel Varela, and loving step-father to Sarah and Joshua Feigon. Dr. Cohen had lost his first wife and the mother of his children, Helen, to cancer in 1970.
Dr. Cohen was Professor Emeritus of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. His career in pathology at Harvard began in 1948, and his contributions to the field earned him an Honorary Master’s Degree from Harvard Medical School in 1991. After 17 years in the pathology department of Massachusetts General Hospital (where he began as a resident), he came to Beth Israel Hospital as Co-Director of the Department of Pathology in 1968, and remained there until his retirement in 2005.
He is remembered by former students as an inspiring teacher and role model and by colleagues as an invaluable member of the department, an accomplished researcher and talented anatomic pathologist. All will remember and mourn the loss of his keen scientific mind, generosity, dry sense of humor and contagious laugh.
