Chester P. “Chet” Durning Sr., 87, of Haymarket, Va., died Monday August 26, 2002 in the Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Va., following a very brief illness. Chet was born in Somerville, Ma., on January 18, 1915, the son of the late Chester E. and Alice (Augusta) Durning. He had resided in Virginia for the past 2 years, formerly living in Derry for many years. Chet drove a tractor trailer for 43 years, retiring from Auclair Transportation, Manchester in 1977. He later worked for Timberlane Transportation in Derry driving a school bus. Chet had a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cornelia (DeGroot) Durning, Haymarket, Va., three sons, Arthur Durning, Colorado, Bruce Durning, Massachusetts, Capt. USAF Edward Durning, Haymarket, Va., also several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Chester P. Durning Jr. in 2001.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 31st at 1:00pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry. Calling hours will be Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm in the funeral home.
