Rita Glennon Barry, 91, of Dartmouth died Saturday August 5, 2006 at Alden Court Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Richard O. Barry.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Nora (Manchester) Glennon, she lived in Dartmouth for most of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
In 1953, Mrs. Barry and her sister-in-law founded Padanaram Pre-School. For 30 years she took great joy in teaching pre-school and kindergarten to children of the area.
Mrs. Barry was a member of the St. Mary's Ladies Guild and the Anthony's Beach Association. She was a graduate of Holy Family High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors include her son, Richard O. Barry, Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Dartmouth; two daughters, Jane Erwin, and her husband Walter, of Falmouth, and Judith O'Malley, and her husband Brian, of Acushnet, two sisters, Mary Jane Baylies, and her husband Winthrop, of Weston, and Patricia Southwick, and her husband Raymond, of Mattapoisett; two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Glennon of Dartmouth and Jan Glennon of Whidbey Island, WA; eight grandchildren, Kathleen Hanlon, Walter Erwin III, Trisha Stravin, Richard O. Barry III, Kevin M. Barry, Caitlin Barry, Shannon O'Malley Kearney, and Kerry O'Malley; ten great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was the stepdaughter of the late Ellen (Saunders) Glennon and sister of the late Winifred Burke, Joseph R. Glennon, Jr., and Richard J. Glennon.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church, Dartmouth. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday 4-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford.
