Obituary

William Furtado, 76, of New Bedford died August 27, 2002 at Sacred Heart Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was the husband of Dolores T. (Teixeira) Furtado, and son of the late Manuel and Philomena (Correira) Furtado.

Mr. Furtado was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for all of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

Mr. Furtado was formerly employed as a teacher and guidance counselor at Roosevelt Junior High School until his retirement in 1989.

Mr. Furtado served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was a recipient of the American Theater medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was a musician in the Navy Orchestra and played at the Inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Mr. Furtado later played saxophone with the Gilly Ferro and Art Perry Orchestra's, and was first clarinetist in the Rochester Regional Symphonic Orchestra.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, William Furtado, Jr., and his wife Susan, of East Freetown, Stephen L. Furtado, and his wife Cheryl A., of New Bedford, and David J. Furtado, and his wife Frances A., of Chester, NJ; 6 grandchildren, Lori L. Luzzo, and her husband Ben, William Furtado, III, Curtis S. Furtado, Brent A. Furtado, Erica M. Furtado and Gregory A. Furtado; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Manuel Furtado, Georgiana Gouveia, Amelia "Millie" Cabral and Arthur Furtado.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford,Friday, August 30, 2002 at 8 AM.Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Road, at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment St. John's Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday, August 29, 2002 from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, MA 02140 or to Sacred Heart Home, 359 Summer St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
