Obituary

Margaret K. (Knowlton) Barrett of Salem, NH passed away on Friday, July 28 at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, NH. She was 82 years old. She had lived in Salem for 38 years, previously residing in Windham, NH, Lincoln, MA, and Reading, MA.

Margaret was born in Bangor, ME, the daughter of Priscilla and Henry Knowlton, a physician and one time mayor of the city. She received her Bachelors Degree in Sociology from The College of William & Mary where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of NH. Margaret was a Director for the Girl Scouts in Boston during the 1950s. She subsequently spent more than 20 years as a devoted and caring kindergarten and preschool teacher at Chapel Kindergarten in Methuen, Stonehil in Salem, NH, and most recently at Quality Time Day Care also in Salem.

A loving and supportive mother, she will be missed by two sons, Robert Barrett of Salem, NH and Mark Barrett of Andover, MA, and daughter, Elizabeth Hunt of Pepperell, MA. Other family members include Robert’s wife Dotty and daughters Jennifer and MacKenzie, Mark’s wife Diane and sons Thomas and Michael, and Elizabeth’s children, John, Emerson, and Sarah Hunt. Surviving siblings include Anne DeCelles of West Hartford, CT and Henry Knowlton of East Machias, Maine.

Friends and relatives are invited to gather for Memorial Visitation Thursday August 24th from 5-7PM at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH. A Memorial Service will follow at 7PM.
