Obituary

Cathryn W. (Whalen) Gibbs, 100, of New Bedford died August 1, 2006 at the Oaks Nursing Home after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late Alfred J. Gibbs.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Patrick and Elizabeth (Chase) Whalen, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Gibbs was a communicant of St. Kilian's Church.
She was formerly employed as a grade two teacher at the Phillips Avenue School until her retirement. During World War II, she was a volunteer for the New Bedford Draft Board.
Mrs. Gibbs was a graduate of St. Kilian's Grammar School, Holy Family High School and Fitchburg Normal School. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, St. Kilian's Womens Guild, Daughters of Isabella and Catholic Womens Club.
She enjoyed making afghans for her family, friends and raffles. She thoroughly enjoyed being with her family.
Survivors include her son Lawrence W. Gibbs, and his wife Elizabeth (Halpin) Gibbs, of New Bedford; three grandchildren, John S. Gibbs of South Dartmouth, Susan E. Swisher of Benbrook, Texas and Patrick L. Gibbs of New Bedford; seven great-grandchildren, Laurie St. Pierre, John S. Gibbs, Jr., Justin P.L. Gibbs, Cameron P.L. Gibbs and Collin P.L. Gibbs, all of New Bedford, Elizabeth Spieckerman and Stephen Spieckerman, both of Texas; one great-great-grandson, David St. Pierre, III.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Friday, August 4th at 9 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Kilian's Church at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting hours Thursday, August 3rd from 4-7 PM.
Interment St. Mary's Cemetery.
