William J. ”Billy” Hill , 83, died Monday July 31st in the Brockton hospital , after a period of failing health; he was the husband of Laverne (Olson) Hill formerly of Whitman, now residing in East Bridgewater.
Born in Brockton, brought up in Whitman son of the late Edwin and Phyllis (Jenkins) Hill. He attended Whitman schools, a graduate of Bentley College, in Accounting.
He was a resident of Whitman for many years, where he owned his own Accounting business, also co-owner of Herring Run Golf Course with his dear friend Howard Lincoln. He played and coached the Whitman semi-pro football team.
Billy was a member of the First Congregational Church in Whitman.
He was United States Marine, during WWII ,in the Pacific Theater
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 22. He was one of the original founders of the Whitman VFW Post #697, for over 50 years and was the Quarter Master for 46 years. In 1988 they dedicated the VFW lounge in his name.
Billy enjoyed spending his winters in Florida and summers in Humarock, an avid golfer and enjoyed dog and horsing racing.
A funeral service will be held Friday August 4th at 9:00A.M. in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Route 58 at the Rotary Circle) Whitman. Visiting hours Thursday August 3rd 4-8 P.M.
