Jerome D. “Jerry” Barry, a 41-year resident of Melrose, died on Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Whidden Hospital in Everett following a long illness. He was a resident of the Chelsea Soldiers Home for the past 2-½ years. Jerry was 77 years old.
Jerry was born in Somerville on November 30, 1928. He grew up in Medford where he attended St. Clements Parochial School and graduated from St. Clements High School in 1946. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy on June 28, 1946, and served at the end of WWII. Jerry was discharged on April 29, 1948, with the rank of Radioman, Seamen. HE furthered his education by receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Boston State College in 1964. Jerry worked at Yellow Freight Systems located in West Roxbury for many years as a supervisor in charge of freight payments. He retired in January of 1991 to spend time with his family and mostly to enjoy babysitting his grandchildren. Jerry was a member of Sgt. Harold O. Young VFW Post No. 2394 of Melrose.
Jerry is the beloved husband of Ann M. (Harrington) Barry. He is the devoted father of Christine Zarzour and her husband Paul of Melrose, Louise Luczai and her husband Robert of Bedford, Mary Marchant and her husband Michael of Stoneham, and Daniel Barry and his wife Barbara of Melrose. Jerry is the cherished grandfather of Olivia and Madeleine Zarzour, Katherine, Michael and Neil Luczai, Daniel, Ryan, Thomas and Evan Marchant, Brendan Barry and the late Brian Barry. He is the brother of the late Joseph, Thomas and William Barry. Jerry is the long-time devoted friend of Gerry Linehan and his wife Jean of Medford. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jerry’s Funeral will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. from the Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main Street, Melrose/Wakefield line followed by his Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main Street, Wakefield, at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting Hours for Jerry will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2006, from 4 – 8 p.m. Burial will take place at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
