James Alton Walker, 82, of Tifton passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at Tift Regional Medical Center. His funeral service was held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2002, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Eddie Hutcheson and the Rev. Jimmie Hinson officiating. Mr. Walker was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Johnny Walker, Jim Bynum, John Raiford Walker, Henry Lee Walker, Billy Stewart and Curtis Stafford served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the members of the congregation of Tifton's First Assembly of God.
Born June 21, 1920, in Cook County, Mr. Walker was the son of the late John henry Walker and Susan Jeanette Weldon Walker. He was also preceded in death by one son, James Henry Walker; five brothers; and four sisters. Before retiring, he worked as a racker at Tifton Aluminum Company; and he was a member of Tifton's First Assembly of God. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II; and he was a member of the American Legion Post 21 in Tifton.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Bertice Butler Walker of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Cliff Briggs of Lilburn; one sister, Blanche Bynum of Lenox; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
