Dr. David M. Howell PhD., a Needham resident since 1951 died on Friday July 21st the Briarwood Healthcare in Needham. He was 81 years old. Born in San Diego CA, Dr. Howell was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He went on to receive his Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan. For over 55 years, Dr. Howell was a chemistry professor at Northeastern University. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society, the Teacher Education Association of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Chemistry. Dr. Howell was involved with the Genealogical Society, especially the Edward Howell Genealogical Association. He was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and served on the District Council and Eagle Board of Review. Dr. Howell enjoyed square dancing with the Natick Square Riggers. The beloved husband for 56 years of Valeska (Haydon), he was the father of Stephen Bergfried Howell of Indianapolis IN and Elisabeth K. Chapman of Hooksett NH. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services and interment are private.
