Corinne Hughes Runyon died peacefully at home on July 17, 2006. She was a former resident of New Canaan, Connecticut, Hanover, New Hampshire and Block Island, Rhode Island.
Corinne was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1919 to Corinne Kyle and Edward Hughes. She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Sam Hughes. She attended Green Street Friends and Springside Schools in Philadelphia and Hollins College in Virginia. Married in 1941 to John Fitz Randolph Runyon (now deceased) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Corinne is survived by three daughters: Gail Runyon Stewart (Mrs. Robert Bailey Stewart) of New Canaan, Connecticut, Kyle Runyon Upton of Needham, Massachusetts and Kim Runyon (married to Arklay King) of South Natick, Massachusetts. She has six grandchildren: Emily Stewart Schoonmaker of New Canaan, Connecticut, Jed Stewart of Hawaii, Jake Upton of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Peter Upton of Needham, Massachusetts, Chelsea King of Los Angeles, California and Chyld King of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. She also has four great-grandchildren.
Corinne always embraced the positive in life. She loved the outdoors and she fostered her love of nature, books, and especially poetry in all who knew her. She was a poet who always commemorated births, birthdays, weddings, graduations and memorial services, along with wonderful descriptions of her treasured walks in Block Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut. Corinne had a gentle and genteel style and was an example for all. She loved travel, the New Yorker and the New York Times which she read religiously from cover to cover every day. She always said, “I’ll see you bye and bye.” She will be sorely missed. A private family burial will be held on Block Island, Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Block Island Conservancy, P.O. Box 84, Block Island, Rhode Island and the Committee for Great Salt Pond, Box 1092, Block Island, Rhode Island.
