Donald F. Swain, 71, of New Bedford died Friday July 21, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Brenda J. (Benoit) Swain.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Capt. Robert J. and Helen (Goss) Swain, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Swain was formerly employed as a commercial fisherman on various vessels out of the Port of New Bedford, retiring from F/V Ambassador.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the New Bedford Fishermen's Union.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jeffrey Swain, and his wife Kelly, of Fairhaven; two daughters, Lisa Swain of Taunton, and Linda Lachapelle, and her husband, David, of Acushnet; four brothers, Robert J. Swain, and his wife Carol, of North Adams, Gerard Swain, and his wife Linda, of Mineola, NY, and Paul P. Swain, and his wife Joan, and Douglas J. Swain, and his wife Claudette, all of New Bedford; two sisters, Sheila M. Lopes, and her husband Donald, of Acushnet, and Anne M. Swain of Fairhaven; six grandchildren, Erin and Kevin Murphy, Kayleigh and Jeffrey Swain, and Jillian and Jeremy Lachapelle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Mary D. Murphy and Patricia A. Dion.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 9 AM in St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd. Burial in Riverside Cemetery will be private. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
