Obituary

Fred Cohen, a resident of Peabody and formerly of Revere, died on Thursday, July 20, 2006 in the Beverly Hospital after a period of failing health. He was 82 years old.

Born in Boston on January 11, 1924, son of the late Julius and Mamie (Tapper) Cohen, Mr. Cohen was raised in Revere where he attended school and graduated from Revere High School. From 1940 through 1942 he was employed as a receiving and shipping manager for Automotive Distributor Inc. of Lynn. Mr. Cohen enlisted in the United States Navy on December 15, 1942 in Boston. During World War II, he served on the USS Texas as a Chief Electronic Technician’s Mate. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal, and was honorably discharged on March 28, 1946. When he returned from the war, Mr. Cohen worked with his father in the tire business for a number of years. When the television began to be mass produced, Mr. Cohen was one of the first television salesmen. He was a member of the Freedom Lodge of Masons which is now merged with the Moses Michael Hays Lodge. An avid sports fan, Mr. Cohen especially enjoyed the New England Patriots.

Mr. Cohen is survived by his daughter, Ellen Hauskens and her husband Allan of Walnut Creek, CA; his sons, Richard Cohen and his wife Ginny of Reading and Jeffrey Cohen of West Roxbury; his brother, Joel Cohen and his wife Mildred of Revere; his sister, Miriam Kaplan of Swampscott; and his grandchildren, Jake, Sam, Matt, and Heather. He was the devoted longtime partner of Lorraine C. "Lorie" Turmenne and her family of Peabody.

Funeral services will be held in the Torf Funeral Chapel, 151 Washington Avenue (Cary Sq) CHELSEA on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Rabbi Neal Loevinger will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ahavis Achim of Revere Cemetery, Fuller St. Everett. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Richard & Ginny Cohen until 9:00 PM on Sunday and 1-4 PM & 6-9 PM on Monday.
