Obituary

SALEM - Thelma E. Wiley, age 92, of Salem, died Monday, July 17, 2006 at the Twin Oaks Nursing Home in Danvers, following a long illness.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Addie C. (Wright) Wiley. She attended Salem schools and earned her degree in education at Salem State College, then known as Salem Teacher’s College, in the Class of 1934.

Miss Wiley taught for 40 years, the first three years in Ashland and then in Salem, where she taught one year at the Juniper School and 36 years at the Phillips School, before retiring in 1974.

She was a lifelong summer resident of her father’s home town of Wellfleet on Cape Cod. She was a member of the Essex County and Massachusetts Retired Teachers Associations, the Wellfleet Historical Society, The Friends of the Wellfleet Libraries and the South Wellfleet Neighborhood Association. She was a volunteer with the Salem Hospital Auxiliary and was an active member of the Tabernacle Congregational Church, UCC, of Salem where she served as chairperson of the Woman’s Association, secretary of the Memorial Fund and assisted at various church functions.

Miss Wiley is survived by several cousins and a longtime friend, Margaret Fitzgerald of Salem.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 11 am at the Tabernacle Congregational Church, UCC, corner of Washington & Federal Streets, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. A committal service will be held at a later date at the family lot in the South Wellfleet Cemetery, Wellfleet. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Memorial Gift Fund of the Tabernacle Congregational Church, UCC, 50 Washington St., Salem, MA 01970.
