Obituary

Carl Bates Herrmann of Denver, died peacefully after a brief illness Thursday, June 29, 2006. He was 88. The son of Carl Strauss Herrmann and Bertha Irene Bates Herrmann, he was born October 13, 1917 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He married Helen Kimball Procter on July 20, 1943 in Reading Pennsylvania.
His early years were spent living in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with his parents, brothers and sisters. He lived for many years in Grafton, Massachusetts, and in South Weymouth, Massachusetts. Mr. Herrmann moved to Denver in 2001.
He graduated from Culver Military Academy, Culver, Indiana, attended Colgate University, Hamilton, New York and the Advanced Management Program at Cornell University’s graduate business school.
Mr. Herrmann served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe during World War II, ultimately assigned to SHAEF in London on General Eisenhower’s staff.
He had a long and fulfilling career as a gas and electric utilities executive and manager with New England Electric System, where he started in 1938 as a summer employee and stayed on to help rebuild the company’s power transmission and distribution lines after the “Great New England Hurricane” of that year. He retired over fifty-five years later, having enjoyed managing several of the company’s districts and serving as a well-liked and effective labor negotiator.
He was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed the music of the ’big bands”, and became a theater buff, late in his life.
Three sons, Carl Procter Herrmann of Longmont, Colorado, Peter Bates Herrmann of Grafton, Massachusetts, and Paul Norton Herrmann of Denver, Colorado, a brother, Allen Milton Herrmann of Scottsdale, Arizona, and a sister, Barbara Herrmann Davidson of South Natick, Massachusetts survive him as well as six grandchildren.
His wife, a sister and a brother preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be held at Needham Cemetery, 128 Nehoiden St, on Tuesday July 25 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Monday from 4-7 PM.
