Daniel Gilbert, Sr., 71, of New Bedford died Tuesday July 18, 2006 at New Bedford Rehabilitation Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Rose) Gilbert.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Joseph and Julia (Fonseca) Gilbert, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Gilbert was formerly employed by Winfield Luggage Company.
He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Daniel Gilbert, Jr., Terry Gilbert, and Deborah Gilbert, all of New Bedford; a brother, Richard H. Gilbert of Falmouth; 10 grandchildren, Lavar, Shauna, Anthony, Devin and Dan-Yelle Gilbert, Carl Mendes, Jr., Shanel, Shain, Shaun and Shanae Pina; two godchildren, Richard Gilbert, Jr., and Donna Green; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the godfather of the late Scott Rose.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday 5-9 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
