Nivarda Marin Varela, aged 85, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully and with her family by her side, on May 14, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. Most recently of Roslindale, Nivarda was born in Zacatecas, Mexico to Maurilio and Isabel Marin, in 1939.
Nivarda lived a rich tapestry of culture, flavor, and creativity. She graduated with distinction from beauty school and was known for her handmade dresses and modern style, which she passed on to her daughters. She raised her three children in Mexico City then in her 50s, her journey brought her to the US, where she embraced her new community. Nivarda's kitchen was a sanctuary - her enchiladas rojas estilo Zacatecas, tinga, tamales, and many more of her specially crafted dishes brought loved ones together, which she embraced with a joyful spirit, contagious laughter and panache for storytelling. Nivarda also expressed herself through drawing, handmade Christmas cards and a love of nature and music.
Nivarda was a devout Catholic whose faith was the guiding light of her life. Her devotion provided solace and strength in times of joy and sorrow alike, and her memory will remind us to savor life’s simple pleasures, cherish our heritage, and nurture our passions.
Nivarda is survived by her three children, Sergio, Fabiola with son-in-law Thomas, and Ninfa with son-in-law Daniel. She also leaves behind two loving grandchildren, Andrea with husband Michael, and Daniela. In addition to her children, she is survived by siblings Obdulia and Mario of Nayarit, Mexico and was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Amelia, Carlos, and Porfirio.
Nivarda will embark on one last journey to her homeland with her funeral mass taking place in Tepic, Nayarit. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to HopeHealth Hospice & Palliative Care, 1085 North Main St. Providence, RI 02904 and the American Stroke Association.

Nivarda vivió un rico tapiz de cultura, sabor y creatividad. Ella estudió cultura de belleza, y se dio a conocer por sus vestidos hechos a mano y su estilo moderno, que transmitió a sus hijas. Crió a sus tres hijos en la Ciudad de México y, después el destino la llevó a Estados Unidos, donde se integró en su nueva comunidad. La cocina de Nivarda era un santuario: sus enchiladas rojas estilo Zacatecas, la tinga, los tamales y muchos otros de sus platos especialmente elaborados reunían a sus seres queridos, a los que ella se entregaba con un espíritu alegre, una risa contagiosa y una gran facilidad para contar historias. Nivarda también se expresaba a través del dibujo, sus tarjetas de Navidad hechas a mano y su amor por la naturaleza y la música.
Nivarda tenía una gran fe católica, la cual fue la luz que guió su vida. Su devoción le proporcionó consuelo y fuerza tanto en los momentos de alegría como de tristeza, y su memoria nos recordará que debemos saborear los placeres sencillos de la vida, apreciar nuestro patrimonio cultural y cultivar nuestras pasiones.
A Nivarda le sobreviven sus tres hijos, Sergio, Fabiola con su yerno Thomas, y Ninfa con su yerno Daniel. También deja dos nietas muy queridas, Andrea con su marido Michael, y Daniela. Además de sus hijos, le sobreviven sus hermanos Obdulia y Mario de Nayarit, México y fue precedida por sus padres y hermanos, Amelia, Carlos y Porfirio.
