Mr. Joseph A. D’Amelio 84, of St. Petersburg, Florida and a former longtime Franklin resident , died Saturday July 15, 2006 at the South Heritage Health & Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy F. (Kaufman) D’Amelio, who died in 2003.
Born in Attleboro, April 20, 1922 a son of the late Alfred and Theresa (Fontaine) D’Amelio he was raised and educated in Franklin, and was a 1939 graduate of Franklin High School.
Until his retirement in nthe early 1980’s, Mr. D’Amelio worked for the former Vappi Construction Co. in Cambridge for over 25 years. He retired as a foreman.
During WW11, he served in the Navy. He attained the rank of Boatswain’s Mate 2nd class., and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He survived the attack there, and stayed in the Navy until his honorable discharge in December 1946. He was awarded the WW11 Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, The American Area Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #273 in Seminole, Florida, The Framingham Chapter of the AFL-CIO, The Seminole Senior Citizens, The American Association of Retired Persons, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
He is survived by 2 brothers, Anthony D’Amelio and Alfred D’Amelio Jr. both of Franklin, 3 sisters Marion “Mary” Ferioli of Franklin, Josephine Coughlin of Brighton, Eleanor DiBenedetto of Fitchburg, and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Jean D’Amelio and Gloria Cashorali.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral with military honors Wednesday July 19, 2006 at 8:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. with a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church 1 Church Sq. at 9AM. Interment will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 11:30AM.
