WORCESTER-Mary Y. (Coates) Gomes, 89, of 25 Oriole Drive formerly of 1060 Main Street, Stanford, CT, and Wareham, MA and died Wednesday, August 21st in Salisbury Nursing Home after a long illness. She leaves 3 sons, John S. Gomes, Jr. and Frank Gomes both of New York, NY and Antone Gomes of Worcester; 3 daughters, Rev. Catherine H. Reed of Worcester, Muriel L. Dawkins of Mayfield, OH and Mary Jardine of Worcester; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. Her ex-husband, John S. Gomes predeceased her; 2 sons, Charles Coates and Clarence Gomes both died in 1994 and a daughter Olivene Moxley died in 1977.
She was born in Chester, PA the daughter of Fred and Sarah Darden and lived in Worcester for most of her life. She attended school in Stanford, CT. Mrs. Gomes worked as a domestic for Hahnemann Hospital for many years. She was a former member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, and enjoyed sewing.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 24th, at 11:00 AM in the John Street Baptist Church, 43 John Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. O’Connor Brothers Funeral Home, 592 Park Avenue is directing the arrangements.
