Obituary

Helen Bateman Bowen, 83, of Tifton passed away Saturday, August 24, 2002, at Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. A graveside funeral service was held for Mrs. Bowen at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2002, at Oak Ridge Cemetery, where she was laid to rest. The Rev. Dr. W. Ches Smith, III and the Rev. Dr. Wayne Roe officiated.

Born September 9m 1918, in Macon, Mrs. Bowen was the daughter of the late Clifford Harris Bateman and Margaret Louise Morris Bateman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Calhoun Austin Bowen, Sr. She attended Shorter College and graduated from the University of Georgia. She was a former member of the Junior League of Macon, a charter member of the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, an honorary member of the Camellia Garde4n Club in Tifton and a member of the Charlotte Carson Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Tifton and a former member of the Springhill Country Club in Tifton.

Mrs. Bowen is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dana B. and James E. Wintermeyer of Richmond, Virginia; one son, Calhoun A. Bowen, Jr. of Tifton; three granddaughters, Cherie A. Finch, Helen B. Wintermeyer and Virginia M. Wintermeyer; one grandson, J. Austin Bowen; one great-grandson, Matthew Finch; and two sisters, Mrs. Alvah H. Chapman of Miami, Florida and Mrs. Hugh M. Comer of Macon.
