Obituary

Eileen Bridget Monaghan, 48, of Chicopee, passed away unexpectedly on April 14, 2024. The beloved daughter of the late Bridie and Michael Monaghan, she was born on October 5, 1975 in Springfield, MA. She was a decorated two-sport athlete and graduate of both Chicopee High School and Western New England College, the latter from which she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Management and where she earned many academic accolades. She ranked amongst the school’s all-time leading scorers in both basketball and soccer. Eileen went on to serve with distinction for twenty-one years as the Chief-of-Staff to Chicopee State Representative Joseph F. Wagner. Following his retirement in 2022, she transitioned into the role of Executive Assistant to Sheriff Nick Cocchi at the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department. Outside of her career in public service, Eileen spent many years coaching and officiating youth girls’ sports. In her leisure time, she enjoyed running, hiking, cooking, and gardening. She was passionate in her advocacy in support of research, and finding cures, for both cancer and Alzheimer’s. She was a dog mom to two rescue dogs, Penny and Bogie, and was a supporter of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. The daughter of Irish immigrants, she was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. She had a love of Irish music and culture. On the wall of her kitchen, she hung maps of both County Kerry, her mother’s birthplace, and County Mayo, the birthplace of her father. Her greatest joy in life was her family and extended family, and having them gathered together taking pictures, making memories, and enjoying her homemade feasts. For all that Eileen will be remembered for, she was a devoted and loving mother above all else. She shared a very special bond with her two daughters, Ashley and Kathleen. Eileen will be deeply missed, every day. She is survived by her two daughters, Ashley Rouleau and Kathleen Brooks, of Chicopee; her brothers John Joe Monaghan and his wife Kristen of Monson, Patrick Monaghan of Hinsdale, Stephen Monaghan of Greenfield, and her sister-in-law Laurie Monaghan of Agawam. She also leaves behind her many beloved nieces and nephews; Aidan, Ryan, Meghan, Ciara, Kyle, Connor and Kevin, along with loving aunts, uncles, and cousins in the U.S., Ireland, and England. She was predeceased by her father Michael Monaghan, Sr. who died on December 22, 2020, her mother Bridie (Grummell) Monaghan who died on August 18, 2021, and her brother Michael Monaghan Jr. who died on April 4, 2024.
