Obituary

Betty Jo Weitman Roach, 66, of Chula passed away Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2003, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Don Hamberry and the Rev. Earl Steffens officiating. Mrs. Roach was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

D. M. Arnsdorff, Dean Hilliard, Thomas Morey, John Roach, Clark Walker and Frederick Weitman served as pallbearers.

Born February 28, 1937, in Effingham County, Mrs. Roach was the daughter of the late Paul Weitman and Mary Elizabeth Thompson Weitman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Remer Jeff Road. She was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and was hired as secretary of the United Way of Tiftarea in 1974. She retired as Executive Director of the United Way of Tiftarea in 2000. During her tenure at the agency, she served as president of the Georgia Association of United Ways and Georgia Representative on the National Board of the United Way of America.

She also served on the Private Industry Council for four years; she was a member of the Blue Ridge Institute and acted as treasurer of the Board of Visiting Nurses for nine years.

Mrs. Roach was a founding member and served as first president of the Organization of Professional Women. She and her husband were sales representatives for the Vernon Company; and she was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Tifton.

Mrs. Roach is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Clay and Lesley and Jeff and Valerie Roach, all of Chula and Cal and Cindy Roach of Tifton; one brother, Paul Weitman of Tuscon, Arizona; and four grandchildren, Jared Road, Christian Paucar, Lucy Claire Roach and Kelsi Roach.
