Obituary

Sister Barbara Kelly, SC (Sister Barbara Marie), beloved Sister of Charity, Halifax for 76 years, entered peacefully into eternal life with her God on March 24, 2024 at Elizabeth Seton Residence, Wellesley, MA. Sister Barbara was born in Dorchester, MA, the daughter of the late Mary Ann (Reney) Kelly and Thomas F. Kelly. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas, John and Joseph Kelly and her sisters, Mary Morton, Margaret McLaughlin and Rita Wynne. She leaves a large and loving extended family of many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews as well as her sisters throughout the Congregation. Sister Barbara’s primary ministry was education, but her many and varied gifts led her to embrace other pathways as well. She began teaching at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine School in Jamaica, New York and moved from there to Holy Savior School in Westmont, NJ and then to Sacred Heart School in Riverton, NJ. Having earned a Master’s degree in Spanish, Sister Barbara returned to Boston and taught Spanish, English and Religious Studies at the Academy of the Assumption, Wellesley, MA, and Monsignor Ryan Memorial High School in Dorchester, MA. Then pursuing studies in the secretarial and finance field, Sister Barbara served at Saint Patrick High School, Roxbury as Secretary and Vice Principal and then in the Payroll and Records Bureau at the Massachusetts State House; as an Administrative Assistant at the Carney Hospital and the Forsyth Dental School and as treasurer for the Jesuit Community at Weston College in Cambridge. She served in Congregational ministry as Provincial Secretary and then briefly at Mother Caroline Academy and Saint Margaret Parish in Dorchester. Sister Barbara’s last mission was at Holy Name Parish and School in West Roxbury. Sister Barbara brought her joyful presence to Marillac Residence in 2006 and later to Elizabeth Seton Residence. Funeral Services for Sister Barbara Kelly will take place on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Mount Saint Vincent, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA. Wake at 9:30 AM followed by a Prayer Service at 10:15 AM and the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 AM. Interment will take place at Saint Mary Cemetery, Needham, MA immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sister Barbara Kelly may be made to the Sisters of Charity Retirement Center, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA 02481.
