Obituary

Boylston: David E. “Mert” Libbey, 81, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 10, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves a son David P. Libbey and partner Susan Bessette, 2 daughters- Lisa A. McCubrey and husband, Scott; Donna L. Rice and husband Matthew; all of Boylston. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren- Kyle and Cole McCubrey; Jackson and Connor Rice; a step grandson, Zachary Murnane; 1 great grandchild, Brielle McCubrey; and a brother, Rick Libbey of Andover, New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Ford) Libbey and by 2 brothers, Dennis and Rod Libbey.

Mert was born in Worcester, son of the late Howard and Helen (Stark) Libbey. He graduated from North High School and served in the National Guard. He worked as a truck driver for the Henley-Lundgren Company in Shrewsbury and as a truck driver and well-driller for the R.E. Chapman Company in West Boylston. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 170 Union and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 4. Mert was a retired lieutenant from the Boylston Fire Department and was a member of the Straw Hollow Engine Works.

Mert owned and operated Mert’s Lumber and Logging for over 50 years. He enjoyed attending logging shows and was an avid collector of model trucks and tractors. He enjoyed farming and raising animals.

A graveside service and burial will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 12 noon in Pine Grove Cemetery, Boylston. There are no calling hours.
