Obituary

Betty Lillian (Bate) Martello, 95, of Townsend formerly of Franklin died March 10 at the Westford House in Westford following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Lawrence “Larry” N. Martello who died in 1992.

She was born in Devonport, England, November 26, 1928, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Lillian (Stevens) Bate.

She met her future husband at the close of World War II and was an “English War Bride”. She left England in November 1947 and arrived in New York where she met her future mother and father-in-law and sister-in–law, where they then drove her to Franklin. She lived with them and married Larry in December 1947.

Betty remained in Franklin until 1998 when she moved to Groton where she remained until 2022, when she went into the nursing home for care.

Betty had worked as a seamstress at Whiting and Davis until she retired in 1998.

She is survived by her son Brian W. Martello and his wife Annette of Townsend. She was the mother of the late Pamela Ann Gomes who died in 2010.

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kristen M. Martello of Upton, Manny Gomes and his wife Kristen of Auburn, Jaime Gomes and his wife Shannon of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Brian W. Martello, Jr of Pepperell.

She is also survived by her great-grandson, Tyler Gomes of Cumberland, Rhode Island and Riley Martello of Pepperell.

Her services will be private with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Franklin.
