Obituary

Fatima (Silva) Aguiar, 81 of Lowell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at D’Youville Senior Health Care Center. She was the beloved wife of Joao Aureilo Aguiar, with whom she would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in April of this year.

She was born on May 13, 1942 in Fonte Bastardo, Terceira, Azores, Portugal and was a daughter of the late Jose De Lima Silva and the late Carmina Freitas. Fatima was raised and educated in Portugal before immigrating to the United States. She settled in Lowell, where she made her lifelong home.

Fatima worked as an assembler and packer at Wang Labs and Prince Macaroni for a few years before retiring from Interstate Container. She was an active member of St. Anthony Church and participated in various societies, including the Holy Rosary Society, Holy Ghost Society, and the Holy Trinity. Fatima found joy in cooking for her loved ones and friends, as well as in crocheting. However, her greatest happiness came from spending time with her family, creating cherished memories together. She especially loved her role as Avo, her home was filled with laughter and the pitter patter of her beloved grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Joao Aguiar of Lowell, she is survived by three daughters, Margarida Silva and her husband, Norbert of Lowell, Carmen Aguiar of Lowell, and Julie Picanco and her husband, Alvin of Nashua; and her grandchildren, Krystal Silva of Lowell, Eric Picanco of Nashua, and Isabel Picanco of Nashua.

She is also survived by her seven siblings, Jose Silva and his wife, Conceicao of Terceira, Mateus Silva and his wife, Fernanda of Terceira, Manuel Silva and his wife, Maria of Terceira, Joao Silva and his wife, Lurdes of Canada, Dorotheia Rosa and her husband, Jose of Canada, Ines Evangelista and her husband, Joao of Brazil, Francisco Silva and his wife, Neusa of Brazil; her sisters in law, Maria Leonilde Aguiar of Derry, NH, Margarida Ines Pontes and her husband, Antonio of Canada, Nazare Espinola and her husband, Francisco of Terceira; and her brother in law, Mateus Aguiar and his wife, Lisilda of Terceira; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was welcomed into heaven by her granddaughter the late Jessica Torres; and her brother in law, the late Luis Aguiar.

On Thursday, February 29, 2024 all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 9-11 a.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816. Her funeral mass will follow at 12 noon at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery.
