Obituary

George M. "Cook" Panagakos 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 17, 2024 in North Dartmouth with his wife by his side. He was the husband of Viola (Zafiropoulos) Panagakos with whom he shared 55 years of marriage together.

George was a devoted husband, a loving brother, uncle, Godfather, friend to many and an exceptional member of his community.

Born on May 2,1928 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, George was the son of the late Michael and Stavrula (Exarhoulakos) Panagakos. He lived in Acushnet most of his life. He graduated from New Bedford High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952 and was stationed in Germany. He attained the rank of Corporal. He was employed at Sears, Roebuck and Company for 42 years and was respected for his work and commitment to the customer.

George was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in North Dartmouth and served on the Parish Council for over 50 years, including past President and officer on many committees. George received the Laity award from His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston for a lifetime of dedication and service to the Greek Orthodox Church. He was also a 55+ year member of the Masons and Shriners and was a past master of Star in the East Lodge. He enjoyed photography, travel, and summers at his beach house. George will be remembered for his integrity, love, devotion, loyalty to his wife and a quick witted sense of humor.

His wife would like to thank the aides at Autumn Glen-Avita Memory Care for the compassionate care that George received from them.

He is survived by his wife Viola "Zafi" Panagakos, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 24th at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Road, Dartmouth at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. His family will receive guests at church on Saturday morning from 9 - 10 AM prior to his service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the name of George "Cook" M. Panagakos.
