Obituary

Macie Jennae Ferland, affectionately known as Macie Mae, Macie Gracie, Macielena, Macie Moo, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at the age of 26.

Born in New Bedford on January 26, 1998, to Scott and Charleen Ferland, Macie was an angel on earth, the very heart of her family. Their love for her was fierce. She was Daddy’s girl and the strength and driving force behind her mother, her mother being the voice she never had.

Macie was born with Pitt Hopkins, a very rare genetic syndrome. Macie never uttered a word, but her silence spoke volumes. Macie attended the Kennedy Donovan Center for the last 23 years. She started there at the age of three at the Day School and graduated onto the Day Hab. KDC will always be a special place for us, it is where friends turned into family. It is also where Macie formed a very special bond with volunteer foster grandparent, Lolita Dykes.

Macie loved spending time at Noah’s Playground where she would happily spend hours on the swings. She also loved her two dogs, Stinkin’ Lincoln and Mugsy, water and playing in the pool. As a child, Macie enjoyed horseback riding. Most of all, she just loved being with family and friends and the attention and love she was showered with. She leaves behind a heartbroken, yet grateful family. We were all better for having been graced with Macie’s mere presence.

She is survived by her loving parents, Charleen and Scott Ferland of New Bedford; her devoted sisters, Cassandra Ferland and her boyfriend Jason Melo of New Bedford and Kayleen Castro, and her husband Jason of Fairhaven; her nephew and niece, Javeri Melo and Amya Melo of New Bedford; her aunts and uncles, Brenda and Alan Pomprowicz of Swansea, Greg Ferland of Fall River, Chad and Kerri Taylor of Dartmouth, Leslie and Tony Decastro of New Bedford, Denise and Kevin Walsh of Plymouth, Lisa and Kevin Napert of Westport, and Richard and Ally Guilbeault of Westport; her great-aunt, Bernadette Roderiques of New Bedford; her great-uncle,
Victor Cunha of Connecticut; and many cousins.

Her memorial service will be held on Saturday February 17th at 12 Noon at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with memorial visitation continuing until 3 PM. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
