Laconia-Otto Schunk, 95, of 406 Court Street died peacefully Friday evening, July 7, 2006 at St. Francis Health Care Center surrounded by his family. Born in Nussbach, Germany on September 1, 1910 he was the son of the late Johann and Magdelena (Schaefer) Schunk. He had been a resident of Laconia for the past 5 years coming from Sayville, New York.
Otto worked as an Avionics Technician for Northrup Gruman and he also worked on the LEM project in Bethpage/Calverton, New York.
Otto came to the United States at the age of 17. He held former memberships within the National Board of the Steuben Society, the Gruman Retirement Society, the Great South Bay Fishing Club where he served as President, and was also a former President and usher for the St. John Lutheran Church in Sayville, NY where he was a member for 60 years. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Group in Sayville, NY, and was an avid woodworker.
Otto was predeceased by his wife of 69 years in 2003, Martha (Schwarz) Schunk.
Otto is survived by his two daughters, Julianna H. Crawford and her husband Richard of Sayville, NY, and Dorothy Steuer and her husband Andrew of Laconia. Fondly known as “Opa”, he is also survived by five grandchildren, Kenneth A. Steuer, PhD, of Bloomington, IN, Timothy J. Steuer of Laconia, Christopher R. Crawford of Sayville, NY, Julianna Steuer Nelson of Gilford, and David J.Crawford of Sayville, NY. 12 great grandchildren also survive him.
Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, July 12th, 2006 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Simoneau-Paquette Memorial Home, 139 Church Street, Laconia. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 am, Thursday, July 13th, 2006 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2238 Parade Road, Laconia, with Rev. David Hackmann, Interim Pastor officiated. A period of visitation preceded the service at the church from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Family and friends were invited to attend. Private burial for the family was in the family lot by the pond at Union Cemetery, Academy Street, Laconia.
