Obituary

Matthias J. “Matt” Mulvey

Born October 13, 1955

Matthias James “Matt” Mulvey (USCGAUX 1NR Division 12 Commander) of Weymouth died peacefully on January 31, 2024, at South Shore Hospital in the company of family. Matt was the son of the late Thomas F. Mulvey, Sr. of Ballydangan, Athlone, Co. Roscommon, and the late Julia Mulvey (Barrett) of Furnish, Lettermullen, Co. Galway. Devoted brother of Martin Mulvey and his wife Karen, the late Mary Mulvey Jacobson and her late husband Carl, Helen Connors and her husband John, Theresa Mulvey Bundy, Thomas Mulvey Jr. and his wife Jacki, the late Rita Mulvey, and Margaret Mulvey Kelly and her husband Christopher. Beloved father of Michael J. Mulvey and his wife Mary-Margaret and Patrick J. Mulvey. Cherished grandfather of Matthias J. Mulvey. Loving husband of Lorelle T. Mulvey (Courtois). He was preceded by his first wife and mother of his children Rosemary Mulvey (Manning). Compassionate brother-in-law to the late Edward Manning and Lt. Col. Joseph Manning and his wife Marianne. Warmhearted uncle to Michele Scarlata (Connors), Patrick and Claire Manning, Christopher Mulvey, Elizabeth Oster (Mulvey), Connor Mulvey, Meaghan Mulvey Bonnet and her husband Bryan, Aidan and Quinn Kelly. Matt’s wickedly witty yet sweet sense of humor was legendary in the family and beyond.

Matt was a proud alumnus of Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury and Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. As a senior engineer contracted with the U.S. Air Force, Matt put his knowledge of construction, planning, and safety in service of advanced U.S. radar systems globally. Thanks to his father, Matt had a lifetime’s experience in building construction and land use. He was a licensed residential and commercial contractor in New England, code consultant, municipal building official, and chairman of Commonwealth of Massachusetts code boards. He was a longtime member of the International Code Council Reference Standards Committee. Matt served as an expert witness in multiple Massachusetts District Courts, New England Superior Courts, and U.S. Federal Court on questions of building construction. Matt served as an interim-building inspector for numerous Massachusetts communities, reorganizing departments and assisting in the selection of new commissioners. In the past, Matt also served as Thermafiber’s Worldwide Technical Representative for which he appeared in an episode of This Old House, and as building commissioner of the City of Quincy. Matt was a past president of the Massachusetts Building Commissioners and Inspectors Association, INC.

Matt’s mother’s Galway heritage gifted him a love for the ocean. That passion for the sea expressed itself in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary where Matt served as a Commander. Matt equally enjoyed “farting around the harbor” aboard his motorboat. Matt advocated for live music and his cherished NPR folk radio station WUMB where he served as a past Chairman of the Friends Council. Matt’s strong convictions were woven by what J.F.K. called the enduring qualities of Massachusetts. Matt advocated for politicians, policies, and programs to improve the lives of working people and their families at the local, state, and national levels. Matt baked some of the finest homemade soda bread available west of the Aran Islands.

Matt’s family is grateful for the kind of loving care given to him by the doctors, nurses, and staff at South Shore Hospital and the New England Donor Services.
