James G. "Jim" Cater, Sr., 77, of Albany passed away Thursday, April 8, 2004, at his residence. His funeral service was held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Glenn Ford officiating. Mr. Cater was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Burt Calhoun, Rob Scott, Keith Carroll, Chris Parrott, Casey Cater and Tracey Cater served as pallbearers.
Born July 31, 1926, in Pickens, South Carolina, Mr. Cater was the son of the late J. Clyde Cater and Lavenia Parrot Cater. He was also preceded in death by two brothers. Before retiring, he was the transportation manager for Lykes Meat Company; and he was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of World War II; and he was a Mason. He played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Tifton Blue Sox.
Mr. Cater is survived by one son, James G. "Jamie" Cater, Jr. of Tifton; one daughter, Vonnie Scott of Tifton; five sisters, Ruth Stokes, Lura Mae Hudson, Geraldine Patterson and Melonee Wood, all of South Carolina and Avonelle Galloway of Florida; ten nieces; and seven nephews.
