Obituary

Anita Bernie Burrows, 93, a resident of Mystic since 1938, passed away peacefully Tuesday at Mystic Manor Convalescent Center after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

She was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 9, 1909 the daughter of Emily and Thomas Bernie. Anita grew up in White Plains, NY and attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA before studying vocal arts at the Julliard School in New York City.

She was the widow of Maurice L. Burrows Sr. who passed away November 12, 1979.

She touched the lives of many with her selflessness, generosity, quick wit, adventurous spirit, and devotion to her family. Anita always had a sparkle in her eye, and will be remembered as both a faithful, loving mother, and a great friend to all. She and her husband shared a special love and enjoyed simple walks as well as extensive travels.

She is survived by her bother, Thomas S. Bernie of Aurora, CO; three children, M. Lester Burrows of Groton, Bruce W. Burrows and his wife Linda of Groton Long Point, and Joan B. Hill and her husband Dana of Ivoryton, 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth W. Burrows, Sarah B. Zanze, Peter L. Burrows, Christopher A. Hill, Katherine H. Smith, and Rebecca H. Reynolds, as well as two great-grandaughters.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at Union Baptist Church, Mystic at a date and time to be announced. Private burial will precede in Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation is private.
