WESTBROOK- Mary Laffin Poitras passed away on Thursday Jan. 18, 2024, at her home in Westbrook with her loving family by her side.
Mary was born in Portland Me., the daughter of James & Mary Crozier Laffin on
July 6th, 1926. She was raised by her grandparents Fred & Emily Laffin after the
death of her mother at three days old.
She married Raymond Poitras on May 3rd, 1945, at the age of 18, after only
knowing him for three days. They raised five children together and their marriage
lasted 43 years until his passing in 1988.
Mary attended Westbrook Schools and was a member of the Westbrook United
Methodist Church, where she sang in the chorus in her younger years. Mary was
a member of Golden Eagle Post #2977 Westbrook and a Lifetime Member of the Deering VFW
Post #6859. She was also a Worthy Adviser of the Westbrook Assembly of Rainbow
Girls at a young age. Mary worked at Bercon Packaging for 19 years, retiring in
1991.
Mary enjoyed summers at her camp on Sebago Lake with her longtime
companion Wilber Rickett now deceased, traveling, shopping and going out to eat
with her daughter.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, husband and two half-sisters Gloria Laffin of
Montreal, Canada and Doris Hanson of Westbrook.
She is survived by her children- James and wife Anita of Windham, Eugene and wife
Cyndee of Westbrook, Scott and wife Kathy of Casco, Toby of Westbrook and Raylene Morse and husband Gordon of Standish; one sister-Helen Hyland of Ontario, Canada; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one expected great grandchild; 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her two cats Lenny and Billy.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday Jan. 28th from 12 – 2 PM, followed by a service at 2 PM, at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton.
