FALL RIVER… Avelino Cruz Hernandez, age 91, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Born in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, Avelino was a son of the late Jose Cruz and Filomena Hernandez. He was the widow of his late wife, Clara Santa Velez.
Avelino moved to Fall River, MA in 1982 in order to be close to his children and grandchildren. He worked in construction for many years and was a talented builder. He loved to do things around his home, which he was always proud of.
Avelino was always happy and full of life. He loved to dance and had a great sense of humor. People gravitated to his positive energy and kindness and he became well known and loved in his community, especially through his walks in the neighborhood. Most of all, Avelino loved time spent with his family.
Survivors include: Sons:, Avelino Cruz of Camden, ME and Rolando Cruz of New Bedford, MA; daughters, Iris Cruz of Puerto Rico, Ruth Cruz of Fall River, MA, Marivel Cruz of Taunton, MA, Clara M. Fontanez of Florida, and Wanda Cruz of Fall River, MA; brothers, Jose Luis Cruz of New Bedford, MA and Ismael Cruz of Long Island, NY; sister, Milagros Cruz of California; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Avelino was the father of the late Freddy Garcia, The late Edith Garcia and the late Margarita Garcia. He was predeceased by his siblings, the late Angel Cruz, the late Raymond Cruz, the late Manolo Cruz.
Funeral service to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will take place at 7 PM at South Coast Funeral Home, 1555 Pleasant Street, Fall River, MA 02723 with visitation in the funeral home from 4 PM to 7 PM prior to the service.
