Oscar Durell (O.D.) Scarborough, 77, of Tifton passed away Thursday, January 6, 2005, at Tift Regional Medical Center. His funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Larry Cone and the Rev. Brantley Seymour officiating. Mr. Scarborough was laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Sean McMillan, Lance Courtoy, Kyle Scarborough, Gus Upshaw, Russ Dorman and Claude Ross served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the employees of both the Tift County Sheriff's Department and the Tifton Police Department.
Born April 17, 1927, in Dodge County, Mr. Scarborough was the son of the late Oscar Dewie Scarborough and Pearl Upshaw Scarborough. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Copeland Scarborough; an infant son; and two brothers, Clinton Scarborough and Herbert Scarborough. Before retiring, he was a deputy sheriff with the Tift County Sheriff's Department and a police officer with the Tifton Police Department, as well as a businessman, being the owner of Scarborough's Dixie Oil Station and Scarborough's Triangle Grocery and Dixie Mart. He was a Mason; a Shriner; and he was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II on the Pacific Fleet. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Tifton, where he served as a deacon; and he had been a resident of Tift County for over 60 years.
Mr. Scarborough is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry D. and Margaret Scarborough and Danny E. and Jo-Ann Scarborough, all of Tifton and Rick and Annette Scarborough of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; two sisters, Neva Lane of Cadwell and Ruth Self of Dublin; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
