Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Edward T. Fitzgerald, 90, of the Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, November 23, 2023. He passed into Eternal Life at CareOne at Redstone in East Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on December 6, 1932, a beloved son of the late Maurice J. and Anna T. (Daly) Fitzgerald. He was raised in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, graduated from the former Cathedral High School in Springfield and had lived in Springfield his entire life. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Private First Class. He was employed as a Letter Carrier in the Atwater Park section of Springfield for the United States Postal Service. He had also worked as a bartender beside his brother Frank for many years at the former Keg Room Bar in Springfield until its closing. He also worked as a crossing guard at the corner of Longfellow Terrace and White Street in Springfield until the age of 83. He was a communicant of Holy Name Church and a member of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club and the American Legion Post 430, all in Springfield and the Springfield Lodge of Elks 61. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Celia (Mistos) Fitzgerald. They were married on July 16, 1955 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 68 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving daughter, Linda A. Fitzgerald Kijek and her husband, Michael Kijek, of Springfield; his dear sister, Kathleen T. Fitzgerald of Deerfield Beach, FL and South Hadley; his dear brother, Frank E. Fitzgerald and his wife, Barbara, of Springfield; his dear sister in law, Kathryn Louise Fitzgerald of Holyoke; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son, David E. Fitzgerald who was Called Home on April 6, 2023; his two dear sisters, Mary Fitzgerald and Ann Walsh and her husband, Joseph; and his four dear brothers, Robert Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald and his wife, Eleanor, Maurice Fitzgerald and his wife, Catherine, and Joseph Fitzgerald. His family will receive friends on Thursday, December 7, 2023 from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. followed by a Prayer Service at 11:15 a.m. at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Prayer Service at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
